Become a volunteer

If you can’t give us your money, give us your time! Volunteers play an invaluable role in the work of the Trusts. There’s no age limit, and we can find something to suit everyone - whether you want to help out with physical work on one of our reserves, or prefer to lend us your IT skills and provide valuable assistance indoors. Volunteers with special needs requirements are always welcome.

Rachel on reserve ResizedPractical nature reserve management is a large part of our work, and there are weekly work parties organised. Volunteers also assist as local wardens. surveyors, committee members, and fundraisers. They also become involved through working holidays, particularly on our Skomer and Skokholm island reserves.

Work placement students are welcomed, and are encouraged to carry out specific projects under the supervision of reserves staff. The Trust currently accepts six long-term placements each year, and hopes to be able to provide more in the near future.

Volunteers come to the Trust for many different reasons, but training and work experience are among the most popular. As part of its education programme, the Trust teaches vocational and life skills. Recent courses have included :

  • Chainsaw operation
  • Brushcutting
  • First Aid
  • Survey training for species including otters, water voles, and dormice
  • Management plan preparation
  • Identification training for flora, fungi, and butterflies
